Finding the Best Shower Head for Your Home

the best shower head for your home

Not everyone has the time or money to renovate their entire bathroom. I’ve found that there are little things you can do to transform your space – painting, décor, organization – but the big things are harder to tackle. Just last year, we decided that the best way to renovate our upstairs bathroom was to simply install a new shower head.

As silly as it sounds, your shower head can make a world of difference. It doesn’t have much of an impact on your bathroom’s appearance, but it has a huge impact on your shower experience.

The trouble was: we didn’t know which one to choose. After putting so much time and research into our own project, I’m going to share some tips on how to find the best shower head for your home.

Consider Types and Benefits First

First thing’s first, sit down and decide what type of shower head you want. There are several to choose from, including:

  • The standard wall-mount head: Wall-mount heads are one of the most common types of shower heads, and their designs range from simple to elaborate. Some have numerous spray modes and adjustable angles. Others have features that combat buildup from hard water. Despite having such a wide variety of features and options available, wall-mounted heads are the most economical option.
  • Handheld: A favorite choice in homes with kids and pets. These can be removed from the mount, so you can control where the water sprays. The great thing about this type of shower head is that you can leave it in the mount for a fixed head, or remove it when necessary.
  • Top mount: Looking for a waterfall or rain-style shower head? Top mount is the right option for you. These install onto the ceiling, or may hang down from an extension arm.
  • Sliding bar: As its name suggests, these slide up and down a wall-mounted base to match the user’s height. This is a smart option for family showers.
  • Aerating: Want the feeling of higher water pressure without having to use more water? An aerating shower head is a great choice. These mix air and water to enhance pressure, and use less water as a result. Aerating models cost more, but will save you on water costs in the long run.

Consider your family’s needs, and choose a type that matches your lifestyle.

Think About the Environmental Impact

You know that I’m always conscious of how my home projects affect the environment, and whether you realize it or not, your shower head will have an environmental impact.

Back in the 1990s, the EPA limited shower heads to a flow rate of just 2.5 gallons a minute. However, most of us use about 400 gallons of water a day. I recommend looking for water-saving shower heads or possibly even an aerating model to cut back on your water usage.

If water pressure is an issue in your home, an aerating model may also be a good choice. However, a low flow model will likely only make the problem worse. I suggest you consider your home’s current water pressure first, and then decide if a low flow or aerating model is your best bet.
